Growing up, my parents were obsessive about counting calories.

Here’s an example to show how much brainpower they devoted to knowing the caloric content of everything: my aunt still laughs when she says that one of my first sentences as a child was “How many calories are in this?”. I spent years eating the low and no fat versions of things and drinking diet drinks. The first time I drank regular Coca-Cola was when I was in second grade, and I remember it tasted like happiness (as sugar as wont to do).

While I wish I could have that same careful devotion to every piece of food I consume that my parents have, I have veered off on a different path. One that led me to look for ways to lose weight quickly before the summer so I can wear my cute new bikini and not accessorize it with self-conciousness or insecurity over the way I look.

In the past, I’ve looked at time-based diets like this one and thought that they would just be a rollercoaster of willpower, eventually ending in a descent into a sugary binge and gaining back all the weight I lost, and then some.

I was wrong about this cookbook.

I’m sure you, like me, looked at this diet and your inner cynic immediately sounded an alarm. “Pfft, yeah, I’ll lose 12-23 pounds, 2-4 inches from my waist and drop 2-3 dress sizes. Just like my Vicodin fairy is going to bless me with deliveries on demand every day for the rest of my life”. Or something like that.

I was able to silence my skepticism when I saw how this diet is structured. You’ll find out your Lean Body Mass and subtract your Fat Percentage. The plan is customized according to your body type.

Ugh, isn’t it stressful when you start a new diet, but then something happens, like maybe you’ve had a really long workday or have to run errands all afternoon, then you don’t know what you’re gonna do about dinner? I already get stressed about that when I’m not dieting, so when I’m on a diet and am in a panic trying to plan dinner…let’s just say it’s not pretty.

That’s one thing I love about this diet, they have all your meals laid out for each day and when to eat it, so you won’t be scrambling to figure out what to eat. This is awesome, because it takes a lot of the guesswork out of trying to incorporate a new diet into your schedule.

What sets the Three Week Diet apart from other diet programs is that it specifically tells you what NOT to eat.

As someone who’s tried various diets over the years, I really wish more diet books would tell you what to avoid, because you could be unknowlingly sabotaging yourself by just eating one thing that could slow or halt the progress.

The Introduction Manual explains the reasons behind weight gain and how to effectively lose weight. It also tells you what supplements you can incorporate into your diet to lose the weight even quicker.

As a side note, I didn’t get the supplements and still enjoyed the results from following the plan. I have been doing it for a little over a week now and have lost 7 pounds, just in time for swimsuit season!

So you see, this diet is no doubt effective. However, it does differ from the usual “just watch what you eat and focus on nothing else” plan.

Well, you start with the biggest ingredient needed to make any big change: dedication. The author, Brian, lays out everything you’ll need for the next 21 days. You will see the pounds melt away to reveal the slim, sexy you that you know is lurking beneath. All you have to do is follow the plan.

I started seeing the benefits after the third day. I noticed that my stomach was a lot more flat (flatter than it has ever been, in fact) and my butt is a lot less jiggly. And that’s a better result in just 3 days than I’ve seen after months of doing the Atkins and South Beach diets.

I haven’t had to do this but could see how it would be an effective way to steer your body back toward burning fat.
